All Classmates; The one thing I liked most about not-a-strand-out-of-place Layne was she never went around saying, “At Libbey we did it this way,” like Glenn and everybody like him did. Layne, as a new AW General was reserved and she held her horses and did not go into conflicts. She was smart in class and a little too fond of John Foster Dulles, but I marked that off to her metropolitan upbringing. If Layne had been raised in Waterville she may have been more like a cross between Margaret O’Brian and Joan of Arc. Showy, but disciplined and she moved down the hall only when determined to do so. During eighth period study hall, she never whined about leaving behind all her friends. She is one of the girls in your life that you wish you could have known better. --Michael Elling
